When I became aware of North Korea 20 years ago, researching this mysterious country quickly became my obsession.
I believed that Orwell‘s dystopia 1984 had come true in East Asia.
Total control – The great leader is watching you.
I grew up under capitalism. For the Western world, North Korea is the evil empire.
There is no understanding and no reflection, only total condemnation.
I suspected early on that this could not be the absolute truth.
In 2017, the time had come. I entered North Korea.
Every morning and evening, the loudspeakers in Pyongyang play the same sad, somewhat metallic-sounding melody.
The ordinary North Koreans radiate a complete innocence, an innocence that we otherwise only know from children.
The entire land is owned by one family.
It is a communist hereditary dynasty in which ideology has become religion.
However, we must try to really understand it, despite all the isolationism, provocations and weapons.
Peace can only be achieved through rapprochement and understanding.
And if you look at history, no one deserves peace and reunification as much as the Korean people.
