“If we are not respected as a friend on the international stage, then at the very least we wish to be condemned as an enemy on equal footing.” Empathic Propaganda (2018–2025) Empathic Propaganda is a series of large-scale paintings, drawings, and silkscreens based on North Korean propaganda posters. I replace a central figure with my self-portrait and substitute the original militant slogans with alternative quotations translated into Korean. While the originals glorify the Kim regime and Chuch’e ideology, the inserted quotations offer a more nuanced insight into North Korea’s self-conception. Satirical and provocative, the project also explores imaginative empathy toward thought systems alien to liberal-democratic assumptions.
